Athanasios Kosmopoulos
Athanasios Kosmopoulos graduated from the Hellenic Army Officers Military Academy (SAOS), as a military legal advisor with the rank of Major, class of 1987. He attended the School of Informatics and Electronic Computer Systems (SPYEE) of the Armed Forces, where he later taught. He was trained at the Paratroopers School as a static line parachutist and received additional training in Information and Special Operations Schools in Greece and abroad. He was awarded the Golden Wings of the U.S. Army Paratroopers.
He served as a lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Communication Systems at the University of the Aegean, worked at the General Staff of National Defense, in Special Forces units, and in the Counterintelligence of the National Intelligence Service. He holds an LL.M. in European Law and Policy from the University Uninettuno in Rome and is a Ph.D. candidate at Panteion University on Hybrid Operations, also serving as a research fellow at the Ministry of Citizen Protection’s Security Studies Center, focusing on Hybrid Threats.
In 2000, he resigned from the Hellenic Army with the rank of Colonel and joined the Unit for the Organization and Management of Community Frameworks at the Ministry of Development, where he still serves as a legal advisor. He served as Commander and President of the Board of Directors of PSNA Dafni from 2004 to 2010. He is the Data Protection Officer at the Ministry of Digital Governance and Head of the Organization and Support Unit of the Administrative Authority of the same Ministry.
He is the national representative of Greece at the European Union’s Cybersecurity Capacity Building Center and the national point of contact for the EU’s Working Group on Hybrid Threats. He represents the Ministry of Digital Governance at the European Security and Defense College, has links with the Center of Excellence on Hybrid Threats in Helsinki, and is a member of the Permanent Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Justice for Personal Data. He was awarded the annual ASPIS Award for 2022 in recognition of his contribution to Cybersecurity and Data Protection in the Public sector. His research areas include Hybrid Threats, Cybersecurity, Personal Data, Disinformation Campaigns, and Fake News.
